European Centre for The Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop)
The European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training was founded in 1975 and acts as European Referenc Point for VET. The abbreviation Cedefop in original terms stands for the French "Centre Européen pour le Développement de la Formation Professionnelle".
Cedefop was one of the first specialized and decentralized institutions in Europe which provided scientific and technical know-how within this specific area and thus enhancing the exchange of ideas between the different European partners.
Originally based in Berlin, Cedefop transferred is headquarters in 1995 to Thessaloniki, Greece. Additionally, there is a branch in Brussels.
Cedefop stands up for the principle of Lifelong Learning throughout the entire area of the European Union, also taking in account the current EU enlargement. The Reference Point facilitates these things by providing information, by analysing of VET systems, political framework and practical implementation .
The aims of Cedefop are:
- Compilating selected studies and data analysis
- Controlling development and coordinating research
- Choosing and spreading information
- Encouraging a common approach to the problems of VET
- Providing a forum for communication and exchange of ideas
